Discussion paper

You work as the quality manager in a residential aged care home with 30 elders of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Over fifty percent of the residents have dementia. Management are considering a change from an activity based leisure support model based on the medical model (functional benefits model, (Stumbo, 2009) to a relational care approach based on a citizenship model (identity and inclusion model) of leisure support (see Lister, 2007 and Sheahan, 2008). They have asked you to prepare a discussion paper outlining an inclusive relational model and proposing what changes would be required within the residence to facilitate this.

Include in your paper a discussion of evidence for a relational model. This requires you to undertake research outlining the efficacy of such an approach in terms of quality of life for elders and the support /care staff. You need to do a literature review and to find other sources of information on relational models of care. You need to provide sound reasoning for a shift to relational care. You need to look at strategies for facilitating this. This means that you would recommend changes in the organization’s approach to things such as:

• assessment;

• prioritizing the identity and relational needs of each individual;

• individual support;

• staff training and development;

• role of families and volunteers;

• cherishing diversity

• valuing and facilitating citizenship


This assessment is designed to assess your understanding of relational models of care, how they may be implemented and the values that underpin these.

It relates to the following criteria:

  • discuss and critically analyze social processes, practices, and structures that contribute to social exclusion and identify how the leisure practitioner may apply this knowledge to develop anti-discriminatory and inclusive leisure practices and programs;


  • critically reflect on their own attitudes towards difference, diversity, and inclusive citizenship;


  • have acquired the capacity to develop inclusively and anti-discriminatory leisure programs that integrate the concept of diversity;


  • develop the relevant academic literacy and learning skills essential for the successful completion of the academic and professional requirements of this subject, including critical reading, critical analysis, critical reflection, academic referencing and professional writing.

These are assessed as they relate to your capacity to articulate a case for the development of inclusive, relational citizenship models of care.

Marking criteria

Understanding of concepts (Ability to articulate argument and discussion in relation to the subject material and the assessment question)

Comprehensiveness (How fully have you addressed the points/answered the question with due regard to the assessment criteria)

Structure (Clarity of structure, cohesiveness, and flow of argument/discussion)

Research evidence (Relevant sources used to give argument/discussion persuasiveness, depth, credibility and weight)

Clarity (Clearness of argument/discussion, use of language, grammar, punctuation, syntax)

Critical thought and analysis (Interrogation of assumptions, analysis of power as it operates in different models of leisure support, ability to link strategies to change)
