Unit 3: The reading “The Longest War” by Rebecca Solnit

In the above reading, Rebecca Solnit has highlighted the hardship and disaster faced by women in the US; Most women are beaten and injured for various causes. In her reading, Solnit explained in a traditional way that information gathered could stimulate readers. She explained, “A woman is beaten every nine seconds in this country……..Centres of Disease Control” (Solnit 20). In this quote, the author has used statistical evidence, which is significant for the readers to understand the points of the CDC as a source. The establishment of credibility has entitled American women to get emotionally attached to their close ones.

In another example, she stated that every 6.2 minutes, one in five women would be raped in the US (Solnit, 2014, p.37). Here, Solnit has used the methods to highlight slaughter committed towards women. The brutal experience faced by American women has a list of different stories of women where instances like abuse and rape are present with huge details. Here, the author has brought attention to the report of rapes and abusive situations women in the US face. She has used direct data and evidence to help and support her thinking. She believes that men should respect every woman and treat her equally. Rebecca has also used real-life evidence that allows the reader to see the truth behind the claim. Therefore, by creating a vivid visual with her words. Rebecca has forced the audience to see the point of view in making the facts.

The reading “The Story of My Body” by Judith Ortiz

The author Judith Ortiz has explained her reading in an innovative way and biographical format. She has written down her life in narratives by categorizing the principal points. It is relatable to the readers to simplify the evidence. For example, she has explained, “I was born a white girl in Puerto Rico……. In the US”. Ortiz has used emotions to connect with readers where similar situations are explained with forthcomings. Here, the author has used emotional language and detailed imagery that conveys the gender roles of women. The vivid details have encountered contextual understanding where intersectionality has provided the idea of racism and sexism. However, the internal struggle has inherited women’s color and upheld societal standards. This story has articulated specific complex elements for gender norms that acknowledge compelling attributes by considering unique facilities (Ortiz Cofer & Bilingual, 1995, p.137).


Both authors have written about similar topics but the strategies are of huge difference. Rebecca Solnit has aggressively written in her reading by using statistical evidence. On the other hand, Judith has used a first-person nonfictional format. She is a source and has articulated evidence that incorporates levity. However, the only similarity in both readings is both authors use emotion to connect with the reader’s respect to convince the arguments strategically. It has considered the experiences that deal with approaches in describing the readings (Ortiz Cofer & Bilingual, 1995, p.137). Both readings showcase their reality and issues and influence the readers to realize the subtitle effects and understand gender issues.

Both the storytelling is excellent because the authors have effectively maintained credibility that offers proper instruction on sources used. It also shows some challenging features that proclaim a thorough list of directions with inevitable support on statistical data relevant to the readings. The political standpoint regarding the Republicans has enlarged the issue of opinions regarding women in the US. However, both authors have directly generated the revolution and suppression of women’s rights regarding rape and pregnancies. It might deal with various pieces of evidence that require support from government officials and the community to overcome the issue of violence against women. Therefore, both authors have concluded on a good note by explaining the significance of women in the US.
