Week 8 Reflection
1. Through Comprehensive Sex Education, the pupils gain essential perspectives about the importance of self-confidence. Peer pressure is a real issue, amongst adolescents. In many cases, an individual might not be ready to get physically intimate but eventually agrees to be so, because everyone around them is doing so. Maria Hinojosa in Once I was you describe, how one of the reasoning behind her getting sexually active was that her friends were doing the deed, so she decided to jump on the wagon and immediately realized that it wasn’t something she was ready for at all. This incident is not an independent occurrence and happens with a lot of teenagers. In order to avoid that it is extremely important that teenagers develop self-confidence. They need to become aware of their individualism, and the fact that their feelings need not be similar to their peers. This can occur through counseling about having the right attitude toward sex. These conversations are best suited to occur in Sex Education classes, where an experienced individual has an authentic conversation. These authentic conversations can easily remove the disorientation present in adolescent minds. According to the research conducted by Ramírez-Villalobos, among the students gaining Comprehensive Sex Education, 94.6% made their Sexual Debut later than the average but very hazardous age of 14 (Ramírez-Villalobos, p.6). This Research proves that Sex Education made a difference in the manner physical intimacy was pursued by adolescents.
2. In order to safeguard pupils from the negative effects of physical intimacy and develop a wholesome attitude in them towards it, it is necessary that protective methods like condoms and contraceptives are available on the school campus. Physical intimacy in the modern world is not a concept that takes place within the confines of the four walls, with one person with whom you are in a matrimonial bond. In today’s age a presumption that just because it is an educational institution, sexual activities wouldn’t take place there is completely wrong. Most of the pupils gain their first sexual partner from their classmates. It is not at all a stretch to think that these people would not physically get intimate at school, and moreover, even if they do not, the place they would be most comfortable buying these protective measures would be School. Since, the place that facilitates open conversation about physical intimacy through Sex Education, will be the place they will be most at ease with acquiring their needs. As Germaine Tuyisenge points out distributing condoms is ‘a solution to protecting and promoting the sexual and reproductive health rights of the youth in secondary schools.’ (Tuyisenge, p.8)
3. Personal Technology in the intense school environment can drive the students to take unfavorable and hazardous steps. In Recent Years educational institutions have become highly competitive. This competitiveness is mainly due to the emphasis institutions like Universities are putting on excellence. If a student doesn’t excel in his/her field, there is a huge chance that they are getting set up for failure. Not only the parents but also the students have become harsh towards each other. The presence of personal technology and usage of it through social media can intensify the heightened emotions of adolescents and drive them to take the wrong steps. NBC News recently reported that an 18-year-old student, Timothy George Simpkins committed a school shooting at Timberview High School due to bullying, in the process also destroying his own life (Relatives of School Shooting say he was bullied, p.1). Though Bullying in no condition is appropriate, a violent response to it is not the solution and should be avoided. Therefore schools should be infused with calmness, which by its very nature Technology cannot bring. Thus, Personal technology should be avoided in the setting of school.
