The author begins the chapter with a list of myths and realities about mental disorders. Some of these myths have been in our society for decades (or longer). Choose two of them that you believe to be most believed in our society and dissect them. Why have they remained and how can educators (or doctors) help debunk these myths once and for all?
Assignment 4: Myths and Realities about Mental Disorders
Yet, this assignment ensures that the author clearly gives out the significance of the myths and realities that often leads to answering the questions related to mental disorder. Yet, this is true that these myths are presented in society for a long span of time, while it has been developed within the mental arena of the people so they are unable to come out from them. This is viewed that many people do not even want to bring out of the stigma and have struck to the formation of the mental illness. In order to answer the question asked this week, I would rather mention in detail the primary fact which is
Myth: “Mental illness is essentially incurable; most mental patients will never recover”.
Research-based on reality, that can answer this question is that in the case of the majority, of mental disorder patients who can cope with a particular situation, the medication given to them, or therapies which are done to them shall help them recover from the primary situation and can eventually get relief from mental illness. Thus, coping with the strategies taken by the medical practitioners shall help to bring recovery and then they can live a normal life again. Research has proved that even schizophrenics can eventually be recovered. Therefore, research which are conducted in the United States as well as in Europe, stated that half of the schizophrenics spontaneously get better over the course of the period for the span of 20 years (Thio et al. 2021). Therefore, professional treatment further tries to make the recovery which is often easier and faster.
Another myth, which is been followed on a daily basis is as follows:
Myth: “Compared to men, women are more, likely to become mentally ill because their lives as victims of gender inequality are more restrictive and oppressive”.
Research based on the studies shows that women have a higher rate of mental illness. Other than this studies show that what man actually wants at a higher rate. However, this is also very interesting because it can bring forth an interest relevant to the role of women who face a lot due to lack of social stigma and who seek various forms of medical assistance which includes psychological care. Thus, women are actually positioned and they can often be diagnosed more often in terms of mental illness because it is simply likely to the professional in order to get assistance that includes surface within the surface. It is regarded as a specified disorder, this is because women are also more likely to suffer from depression as well as anxiety attacks, while in the case of men, are more likely to have antisocial personality which is often signified by paranoia (Thio et al. 2021).
Thus, I think that it has remained in society because most people are of the belief that they consider these myths to be functioning since the ancient period of time, so it has to be followed. Thus, in this case, the doctors, philosophers, or educators in a really sarcastic way often try to enroll the ideas that these myths are simply lies to us, and we should never follow them. Moreover, doctors and educators have found that mental disorders can be reduced, because this is still now followed in society, and yet it cannot be removed. Thus, doctors and philosophers have taken up the initiative to debunk these myths but a part of this society is still bound to follow the myths based on mental disorder which dissects the mentally ill people from society as some people to date thinks that mental illness can never cured or women are more likely get mental illness as compared to men.
