Unit 2 Discussion: IHI Model of Improvement
In order to provide the utmost care and facilities in any healthcare environment, integration of improvement and implementation are considered to be the most important steps. With the help of these two, an effective intervention regarding any problem can be achieved. Improvement question is crucial because it will evaluate the picture of the current scenario, and give an idea of what improvement is suggested. On the other hand, the implementation question is also important because it will illustrate what ideas should be taken into action to improve the conditions.
Along with these two stages, the two models, the PDSA cycle or the Plan – Do –Study- act approach, and the Model for Improvement (MIF) system also plays a very important role in achieving targeted outcomes. As explained in the video, these two models are interrelated. In order to achieve wholesome success in any plan or to solve a problem, integration, and implementation of both cycles are very crucial (youtube.com, 2009).
The Model for Improvement (MIF) system, primarily focuses on the three perspectives which include, aim, measure, and changes. The first step of any plan should always be the aim, which is further processed by the measure which means what actions to be made to change a situation, and the last one is the changes that mean the evaluation of the implementations. All three stages (aim, measure, and changes) of MIF, can be attained beautifully by the PDSA cycle because the “aim” step is somewhat related to the “planning” stage, the “measure” stages come under the “do” and “study” stage and the last “change” stage is related with the “act” stage of the PDSA cycle (Christoff, 2018, p.199). Both these two models help the observer to provide a roadmap and track their plan progress. Not only that this will also suggest the corrective measures and possible remedies for further improvement of the planning sections.
