Discussion: Reflecting on What You Have Learned
1) What skills do you think a good communicator should possess?
Ans. Communication is a crucial element of survival. One cannot express their feelings without it. The whole world would not function properly and chaos would descend. Thus, communication is paramount. A good communicator can effectively communicate their emotions and feelings to the other person or a group.
Good Communication
A good communicator shall possess several qualities before being considered a “good” communicator. Skills to observe are something that the communicator must have. It is important to first observe and absorb knowledge and information about the subject that the communicator wants to communicate. The communicator shall have the skills to make their message precise, simple, and clear. A confusing message will hinder the process of communication. Listening skill is essential for an able communicator to possess. One needs to be a better listener than a better speaker. A good communicator must be persuasive. Their emotional intelligence must allow them to influence communication.
Skills such as having good self–esteem and self–confidence are also pertinent to be present in a good communicator. Courtesy skills are paramount to be incorporated by the communicator as without them the whole process of communication is not only rude but also incomplete. The skills of having correct gestures and body language which come under nonverbal communication are also pertinent to be present in a good communicator. Apart from speaking, one’s expressions and eye contact play a crucial role in communication. The ability to choose the correct form medium to communicate and finish the communication by giving proper feedback is also necessary to be present in a good communicator.
A good communicator must have all these skills. All these skills help a communicator to better themselves. The communicator cannot do without any of them. If the communication is a success, then the viewpoint of the communicators comes across correctly.
2) Name at least three things you have learned in the class this semester that have improved your communication and/or your public speaking abilities.
Ans. The three things that we have learned in the class this semester that have improved our communication and/or our public speaking abilities are:
Culture and Diversity in Communication: The way we have learned about the role and necessity of different cultures and diversities has helped me a lot. Communicating with people or groups hailing from cultures that are diverse helps us understand the world from a broader perspective. We take into account the differences work through them and establish good communication.
Nonverbal Aspects of Communication: This semester, we have learned the importance of the aspects of communication that are nonverbal has helped us bettering ourselves. While giving a speech in public, it is important to appear confident, have the correct posture, and right expressions with whatever speech one is giving. Even while communicating with one person, having proper gestures like facial expressions and eye contact is important.
The importance of effective listening skills: Listening skills are believed to be extremely crucial in communication. If one does not listen and understand what the conversation is about, then it cannot be expected of them to have fruitful communication. There will be hindrances. However, if listening skills are given heed then communication will certainly run smoothly.
