W4 Discussion: National Parks

Instructions: This week we will understand our impact on National Parks, and what we should be doing to preserve them.  National parks can be a controversial topic, so make sure that you keep your post and your replies respectful!

National Parks can be defined as an entity that: “preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The Park Service cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world” (NPS, 2018).

  • Choose the state in which you reside, or if you are deployed, one that you have visited or are interested in visiting. There are a lot of parks, so make sure you choose one that is different than your classmates and use it in the title of your post.
  • Recall that this is a biology class, therefore please select a park that allows you to discuss the wildlife (plants and animals) and ecological and economic advantages as your priority.

W4 Discussion: National Parks

The park I decided to select for this week’s discussion is Mount Rainier National Park

 located in Washington, USA.  The reason behind the selection of this park is this is located nearby where I am currently stationed. This area is well known for its magnificent view, which always attracts me to know more about this park.  

The range of the park: The range of the park includes approximately 236,381 acres which constitute about 956.6 Km2 (Silverman, 2020, p.22).

Wildlife variety found in this park: The vegetation variety which is predominant in this area includes the Alpine variety and the Alpine Meadow variety. It has been evited that, more than, 960 types of vascular plant species and around 260 nonvascular plant species can be identified here. A wide variety of mammals can be seen here, which includes, the black bear, coyote, snowshoe hare, red fox, skunk, and many more. A huge range of bird varieties can also be seen here, which includes mainly the thrush, kinglet, grouse, Canada jay, finch, golden eagle, and so on. This park is also popular for the variety of fishes it inhabits, they are rainbow trout, sculpins, mountain whitefish, bull trout, and many more. A huge number of enormous fishes enter the lakes, rivers, and other water bodies during the season of migratory cycles. This park acts as a wide range of natural reservoirs although.

Kind of recreation present in the park:  This Park offers a wide range of recreational and educational facilities, which includes, glaciers, old-growth forest climbing opportunities hiking, scenic drives, and many more. Not only that this park offers fishing and boating, bicycling, the discovery of wide flower ranges, trekking on the snow in the winter, and many more. It is also famous for its active volcano (Beason et al. 2019, p.25). 

Visiting in person: Yes, I have visited in person at this park as its magnificent beauty always attracts me. 

Ecological advantages of this park: The Park is well known for the preservation of a wide variety of alpine and subalpine vegetation variety along with most of the glaciated tundra, wetlands, and lowland forests. Its wilderness acts as a protection against climate change.  Its natural diversity, wildlife, animals, vegetation, flora, and fauna also serves as the research subjects and educational development for the mass.

Economic advantages of the park: As this park offers a wide range of recreational activities it helps to support a huge livelihood.
