Case study 1

Taylor is 15 and drops in occasionally at the youth resource centre that you work at. She is a pleasant girl who has had a number of struggles with her school peer relationships. She does not have any real problems outside of the school setting.

She is clearly very distressed.  She states that “I’m over them calling me names. They exclude me, roll their eyes and whisper behind their hands. It makes me feel sick and I’m just over it. I just want to change schools. I’m over being called names and dumped when they feel like it. One minute we are friends and the next they can’t stand me. When it happens I feel like punching them. Why can’t I find friends that act like friends?”

Case study 2

Nick dropped into a men’s resource centre for the very first time and asked to speak to one of the workers after a friend’s recommendation. He states “I think I’m depressed. I’ve been running my own business for years and getting nowhere. Losing more money than I’m making, my wife is fed up with paying the bills. She lost her job and now she has even less money. She’s got some casual work but never knows day to day if it’s going to continue. I know I need to get a job but it is not as easy as I thought. I really thought that I would walk into one if I needed it but I haven’t, I keep applying and getting knock backs. I think I’ve stuffed my marriage. All I do is yell at my whole family. I think they are over me as well.”
