A lab report is how you explain what you did in an experiment, what you learned, and what the results meant.Key

features of each section are described below:

Title:

  • The title says what you did. It should be brief (aim for 10 words or less) and describe the main point of the experiment or investigation.
  •  An example of a title would be: “Effects of Ultraviolet Light on Borax Crystal Growth Rate.”
  •  If you can, begin your title using a keyword rather than an article like “The” or “A.”

Purpose/problem:

  • Introduce the topic of study. A short paragraph explaining what we were trying to find out in this lab.
  • Include information about the variables and/or subjects.
  •  This section should provide the reader with enough information to understand what you are doing and why you are doing it.
  •  Do not copy the experimental objectives from the lab instructions.

Materials:

Procedure:

  • This is a detailed, step-by- step description of what was done.
  •  Be sufficiently detailed so that anyone could read this section and duplicate your experiment.
  • Write it as if you were giving direction for someone else to do the lab.
  • You will be writing in the past tense and do not use proper nouns or pronouns. (For example, “First, two grammes of sodium bicarbonate were added to the beaker.”)
  • It may be helpful to provide a diagram of your experimental setup or include a picture.

Data/Findings:

This section should include any data tables, observations, or additional notes you make during lab. All data tables, graphs, observations, or additional notes you made during lab will be included here and should be labelled appropriately. Be sure to refer to figures and graphs in the text of your report.

Tables:

  • Each table must contain a number (i.e., Table 1) and a title that describes its contents.
  •  The number and title must be placed at the top of the table.
  • The word “data” or “results” is not a suitable title for a table. The title should be complete enough to enable the reader to understand what the table shows without having to read the text.
  • The columns must have headings with units.

Figures:

  •  Each table must contain a number (i.e., Table 1) and a title that describes its contents.
  •  The number and title must be placed at the top of the table.
  • The word “data” or “results” is not a suitable title for a table. The title should be complete enough to enable the reader to understand what the table shows without having to read the text.
  • The columns must have headings with units.
  • Graphs, diagrams, and photos are all called “figures.” It is incorrect to call a graph “Graph 1,” for example; it should be “Figure 1.”
  •  Each figure must have a figure legend that includes a number (i.e., Figure 1) and a brief description of what is shown.
  • Figures are numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. They are numbered separately from tables.
  • Figures should not have a title at the top.
  • Label the axes on a graph, being sure to include units of measurement. The independent variable is on the X-axis. The dependent variable (the one you are measuring) is on the Y-axis.

Conclusion:

  • What did you learn?
  • Interpret your results in this section; draw conclusions from your data.
  • Explain in detail how you reached your conclusions.
  • You must discuss all data presented in the “Data/Findings” section.
  • Compare your results with another group. Why were your results the same or different as someone else’s? What could be done to improve this lab in general or specifically what you did?
  • Discuss any results that appear to be incorrect or not as expected.
  • List at least 3 possible sources of error.
