Select and describe two public health successes (from any country). (For example: reduction of motor vehicle deaths and reduced exposure to occupational hazards.)
Compare and contrast how the strategies used to address these two issues have changed over the last 50 years.
For each issue there is a particular story of success. You task is to investigate the strategies used over the last 50 years to address each of the two known successes in public health so you can understand how success has been achieved.
Clarify for yourself what types of interventions have been used over time (technology? medical care? engineering? behavior change? increased access/population reach? regulation? changed social norms) and what strategies have been put in place over the last five decades.
While this will be interesting in itself, what is even more interesting and instructive is how strategies we have used over the last five decades to address one issue are similar to or different from the strategies used to address the other issue over that time period, and why this is the case.
In the case of motor vehicle crashes, for example, technology and engineering have played key roles in making roads and cars safer, and these measures have been supported by legislation and public education. Have we taken the same approach to address HIV in Australia? If not, why not? What other strategies might have been important at different times over the last 5 decades to address HIV
“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health is viewed in a holistic context, that encompasses mental health and physical, cultural and spiritual health. Land is central to wellbeing. Crucially, it must be understood that when the harmony of these interrelations is disrupted, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ill health will persist.“ (Social and Emotional Well Being Framework for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health and Social and Emotional Wellbeing):
For this assignment you will write a essay on the following topic:
Why do Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations in Australia still experience significant inequalities in health? In your essay, identify and critically review 3 or more strategies that have been used to improve the health of Indigenous Australians over the last 50 years.
