Assignment Requirements

In this assignment, you will analyze the global presence and services of a particular country and form an opinion on the future prospects of the country to offer services to worldwide organizations. The deliverable should be written for a business audience (i.e., assume the audience is an organizational executive – use a business style structure and approach).

Choose the country assigned by your instructor for study or use one of the following countries if one was not assigned: Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Egypt, India, Mexico, Panama, Poland, Republic of Ireland, Russia, Sri Lanka, or Vietnam.

The purpose of the country profile report is to analyze the information technology outsourcing (ITO) and/or business process outsourcing (BPO) services offered by suppliers around the world. The paper should describe key cultural, geographical, and political and economic data about the country. Also, evaluate the extent to which the country’s profile would make it a good candidate for U.S. businesses to use offshoring of services in a virtual team situation. To support the analysis, include information on the background of the country, a supplier overview, and concluding recommendations. The follow items may be helpful in the analysis (not all of these items must be addressed in the report – findings will vary by country):

 

Background:

* Cultural, geographical, political and economical data about the country.

* ITO/BPO services exports and imports (OECD database as a reference).

* Key government policies pertaining to ITO/BPO (e.g., tax exemptions, etc.).

* ITO/BPO workforce (e.g., number of graduates per year, specialty skills, etc.).

* The major cities within the country providing ITO/BPO services. Describe the relevant infrastructure of these major cities (e.g., electricity, transportation, buildings, security).

* Risks companies will have to mitigate when outsourcing to suppliers in the country.

 

Recommendations:

* Analyze the future prospects for the country to offer services to worldwide organizations.

* Analyze the extent to which the country’s profile would make it a good candidate for U.S. business to use for offshoring of services.

 

Second Assignment:

Exercise 1: Factors in Building Trust

* Analyze the methods for developing leadership skills as a virtual team leader.

* Manage the working of a project virtual team.

 

Instructions:

Step 1:

* How many siblings they have and where they fall in the sibling order (oldest, youngest, or whatever)

* What was the most difficult or important challenge of their childhood

 

Step 2: Ask team members what they learned about one another that they did not know. This reinforces the purpose of the exercise and allows for a natural ending to the conversation.

 

Step 3: Write down your individual preferences relating to acceptable and unacceptable behaviors around discussion and debate. Areas might include use of language, tone of voice, emotional content, expectations of involvement and participation, avoidance of distractions, or timeliness of response.

 

Step 4: Members should review their preferences with the rest of the team, while someone captures key areas of similarity and difference.

 

Step 5: Discuss collective preferences, paying special attention to areas of difference. Arrive at a common understanding of acceptable and unacceptable behavior that all members of the team can commit to. The leader may have to play a key role in breaking a tie.

 

Step 6: Formally record and distribute behavioral expectations around how the team will deal with conflict.

Assignment Requirements

You will be assigned to a team for this exercise. You will either be in a team in the same location or you will be separated from your team members and sent into ‘remote’ locations and attempt to solve a complex problem using only ‘local’ teams communicating electronically.

 

Answer these questions:

* What particular complexities and complications did you find?

* How would these have been different had you been in the other type of team (virtual or in the same location?)

* How can latency and remote communications affect teamwork, productivity, problem-solving, and team dynamics?
